The Journey

The Journey

30+ years,21+ countries, 30,000+ photos, very diverse water-colors (En Plein Air and from my Studio) - photography gets me going as well, nice combination! Underpinning these is my strength in drawing and sketching. I’ll draw from all of this including contemporaneous and reflective notes.

I’m sure that you will enjoy the journey as well. Let us start in the middle , July 2000, on the great wall at Baddaling (west of Beijing). En plein air using a Lucas pan set of watercolors and generating a lot of interest with school kids from western Mongolia!

The following is a snippet of contemporaneous notes that I prepared on July 18

I went down for breakfast in my Safari outfit with my bag of paints to a roar of laughter. Careful what you eat! Consider what a bathroom on the Great Wall might look like. Many of our group didn't eat or had a very light breakfast!! My solution-have some Imodium and a light breakfast (fruit, omelet and French toast). Off to the Great Wall, 1.5 hours west of Beijing…..

Not a cloud in the sky, dense smog on the jet stream from SE Asia and 45C. Later in the afternoon at The Forbidden City in Beijing, same conditions and 50C with 100% humidity!!

As I learned from this trip and subsequent trips to many areas of China – art has been a pivotal part of Chinese life for many millennia. My brush made trips to very rural areas much safer and enriching. The experience left a big impact on my art and my eye when observing a scene as a subject for a painting, sketch or photograph.

I’ll keep adding to The Journey over the next weeks and months. When a new piece is uploaded, I’ll let everyone know through my facebook.
